Self-Taping School
What to expect
The Self-Taping School is a comprehensive online course designed for actors to master the craft of self-taping — an essential skill in today’s digital audition landscape.
We don't show you how to take yourself, but how to make sure the audition you capture on screen ... stands out!
Do you have to face the camera to deliver emotion? Your feelings? We say ..... maybe.
From years of casting, and from hundreds of thousands of auditions, we have crafted a unique approach that gives the actor complete ownership of the audition stage.
Which is the key to delivering an audition that concentrates on the frame - where you stand and where you look - and not solely on script analysis.
This is the FINAL Self-Taping School Course with the legendary Greg Apps feedback.

What is included
These are the lessons included in the
Self-Taping School
Lesson 1: Possibilities of Self Taping
OK, let’s get this party started!
And I hope you relate to your journey here at STS as a party! Well, at least a journey and time that is full of enjoyment and meeting new people. And new concepts.
We aim to change your thinking about how an actor can use a self tape to find new territory. Find a new way of looking at your self tapes.
The self tape is not a test of your ability.
It is an exploration of your suitability for a role.
Lesson 2: Start Thinking Like a Casting Director
Today we are looking at the Audition Audience. That small group of people who sit in judgement of you.
There are not many of them. But each and every one of them can change the course of your career.
Lesson 3: Your New Targets and Career Goals in Acting
In this lesson we are exploring how to take our tips and ideas and use them in the real world. For a real member of the audition audience.
And how to make them pay attention. To notice you for the first time.
Or to notice a new you!
Lesson 4: The Best Qualities in the Character. Your Character
There are three qualities that every movie star has. And if you are going to succeed you need to also have those qualities.
Don’t worry, I am not asking you to be a brain surgeon.
But simply to have appeal.
Lesson 5: There are Traps in the Audition Space
So this lesson in my opinion, is the meat and potatoes of Self Taping School. Why? Because this is where our training takes a big departure away from traditional drama techniques.
This lesson takes the well know established format of the audition space, and turns it upside down.
There is an important concept in this lesson. And for many of our member it takes a while to get used to.
But ultimately, it will be the foundation of delivering the difference between your self tape, and everyone elses.

Lesson 6: Choose! Character Decisions are YOUR Choice,Not the Writer’s
In the audition world of The Audition Technique, the actor holds all the power. For the character. For the scene.
But this power is not given to you. You must take it.
Which is tough (impossible!) to do in the room, but easy peasy in the self tape space in your home
And remember, actors were born to make mistakes. Not to deliver perfection.
Lesson 7: The Magic … of ‘Moments’. And the Rhythm of Your Character
Moments ……. Happen by accident. But only if you let them.
99.99% of actors will do a second take if they fluff a line. Why? They are seeking perfection (which we spoke about in the last lesson.
But it is super dooper difficult to have moments in the audition space. Because it is sterile.
Find your own stamp on the character by letting outside factors impact your delivery and your eyeline.
Because only then have you delivered a version if this audition that is unique to you.
Lesson 8: What Motivates Your Character? And What Distracts Them?
Today we are exploring things that distract you. In effect, all I want you to know is that speaking TO the reader, AT the reader is as interesting as paint drying.
Lesson 9: What is Your Brand? (Part One)
The first thing you have to come to terms with if you are to enjoy actors success is there are two types of roles:
- The roles you would love to play (heroes, spies, bad guys etc)
- The roles you were born to play (perhaps nerds, boffins, losers)
Because when you capture the niche that is unique to you, and that your agent knows it, and the casting director knows it, then you get audition opportunities for roles you were born to play.
Lesson 10: There is Magic in Unscripted Selfies!
We have an idea here at The Audition Technique. And that idea is that you can speak volumes without a script.
We have called it an unscripted selfie.
A self tape that is done without a script. Just simply a character.
This lesson shows you how.
Lesson 11: What is your Brand? (Part One)
How to capture the role you were born to play.
It is not rocket science but it does need you to research and then, armed with that information, make decisions and choices that trigger a response from your targeted Casting Director. Or Agent.
And then let’s talk about relationships
Lesson 12: The Big Kahuna in Auditions? Status. It Creates the Relationship
Do you have superiority? Or inferiority?
Can’t decide? Well you need to. Because then you have created a relationship that is based in drama.
What I am talking about is status.

Lesson 13: Your Brand (Part Three)
Brand speaks volumes. A targeted conversation directly to people who influence your career.
This conversation is pitched perfectly when you make the right brand choice.
And brand, is not one thing.
Lesson 14: The Clues to Your Character
Remember ….. character is king
A very good actor finds clues on the page for their choice of character. And with that in mind, they build a mental picture of the type of character that pops.
For them, not for everyone.
And that must be your goal
Lesson 15: Let’s Wrap Up a Six Week Roller Coaster Ride!
In this lesson we are exploring how to take our tips and ideas and use them in the real world. For a real member of the audition audience.
And how to make them pay attention. To notice you for the first time.
Or to notice a new you!
